A two-component smoke, consisting especially of silicon tetrachloride and an ammonia solution, is particularly suitable for use as "practice smoke" because of its non-toxic nature. A device for producing the smoke in the terrain can be constructed so cheaply that its return and re-use becomes uneconomic. In the case of one variant, the chemicals are atomised in an airflow, and in the case of another variant they are sprayed out of a double-nozzle system. <IMAGE>
