The method comprises passing gamma rays from a gamma-ray source (1) through a filter (2) made of a substance having a split Mössbauer spectrum and through substance (3), under investigation and registering gamma rays that have passed through the substance (3) by a resonance-type gamma-ray detector (4). The gamma-ray source (1), filter (2) and substance (3) are moved in synchronism: the gamma-ray source (1) and filter (2) at a predetermined constant velocity, and the substance (3) with a predetermined constant acceleration. The movement aligns the energy of the source output and of the filter absorption with the centre of the absorption energy of the converter in the detector, and sweeps the substance 3 through that energy value providing a spectral scan. The filter may have a quadrupole split or polarised components in its Mössbauer spectrum. <IMAGE>
