PURPOSE:To simplify constitution and to miniaturize a device, by forming a detecting pattern which changes the output of a sensor means corresponding to the movement of a head driving belt. CONSTITUTION:The titled device is constituted in such a way that a slit 15c for detecting a head position formed with the same pitch as the moving pitch of a head is formed, and the slit itself functions as a linear encoder. And a photosensor 16 in which a light emitting element and a light receiving element are arranged oppositely by interposing a steel belt 15 is arranged. And when a head carriage 5 that is a magnetic head 6 is transferred with a prescribed pitch, the transfer of the head is performed by driving a stepping motor, and furthermore, and position detection is performed by the photosensor 16 and the linear encoder by the slit 15c on the steel belt 15 so that the rotational pitch of the stepping motor can be set always constant accurately, and fine adjustment for that is performed. Therefore, it is possible to realize a head transfer device with remarkably high accuracy. In such a way, the simplification of the constitution and the miniaturization of an equipment can be attained.
