In a rail pad having projections 15 to locate the pad relative to a sleeper 17 the projections are confined to the undersurface of the pad within, and spaced from, the periphery of the undersurface. Two or more projections or buttons 15 provided on the undersurface of the pad engage holes 16 in the top of the sleeper 17. The buttons 15 may be mushroom-shaped, conical, Fig. 5 (not shown), or as shown in Fig. 6 of cruciform shape arranged to engage similar shaped grooves in the sleeper 17. A deformable strip 11 of semi-circular or triangular configuration and preferably integral with the pad, extend around the marginal edge of the top and/or the bottom surface of the pad. The strip 11 may be at the extreme edge of the pad or slightly inwardly thereof. The strips on the top and bottom surfaces of the pad may be aligned or offset. Grooves 12, 13 of arcuate, triangular or flat-bottom cross-section may be provided on the top and bottom surfaces of the pad. The grooves 12 on the top surface of the pad are arranged at right-angles to the grooves 13 on the bottom surface of the pad. If the pad is devoid of grooves on the top surface the bottom surface may have two sets of parallel grooves arranged at right-angles. Alternatively the bottom surface may be devoid of grooves and the top surface provided with grooves.
