PURPOSE:To calculate the average grain size of blast furnace charge by obtaining the image signal on the surface of the charge by a television camera installed in the throat of a blast furnace and processing the image signal after Fourier transform. CONSTITUTION:The video signal from the television camera 3 is monitored as an image by a television monitor 5 and the image processing is executed in real time by digital processing in an image processor 6, the output of which is outputted to a CRT display 7 and a printer 8. There is much dust in the blast furnace and the sharp image on the surface of the charge is not obtainable in some cases. The image processing is thereupon executed by taking out the signal for an optional one scanning component of the television camera, determining power spectra by the Fourier transform in real time and calculating the grain size only when the component of the frequency range higher than the predetermined frequency among said spectra is larger than the predetermined threshold value.
