The subject of the invention is a method for fighting fires, characterised in that at least one zone surrounding the fire is covered with a product in gel form made from a powder of inorganic material, retaining water and capable of forming a continuous layer adhering to the combustible material, and to the ground, whilst staying in this form for a sufficiently long time which can be up to several hours. The invention also encompasses the application to fire fighting of a product consisting of a powder of inorganic material containing at least 30 % by weight of constitutional water structurally bound in its molecule and capable of giving, with the water, a colloidal suspension.
