Freely moving bodies such as, for example, rolling or runaway vehicles, round packages, are normally braked by allowing the bodies to impact on a resiliently supported catching element. By this means alone the body receives a considerable shock and it is moreover necessary that the potential energy capable of being stored in the springing is larger than the kinetic energy of the body. Bodies with larger energies or velocities can be braked without pressure and shock if the catching element (6) is set into motion in the direction of motion of the body (1) by means of a catching drive (4, 5) on the approach of the body (1), in such a way that the catching element and the body reach the same position and velocity at a fixed instant. The catching element (6) is subsequently braked with dissipation of the movement energy.
