PURPOSE:To readily and efficiently obtain the titled compound in high selectivity and yield, by reacting a substituted arylethylene with CO, water or a lower alcohol in the presence of a specific metal salt together with a Pd based carbonylation catalyst and as necessary hydrolyzing the reaction product. CONSTITUTION:A substituted arylethylene expressed by the formula such as p-isobutyl styrene is reacted with CO, water and/or lower alcohol in the presence of a salt such as halide salt or acetic acid salt of at least one kind of metal selected from Cu, Zn, Al, Fe and Sb used at an amount of 0.05-1.5atom. based on 1atom. of Pd metal such as CuCl2 together with a Pd based carbonylation catalyst such as PdCl2 and triphenylphosphine at 40-200 deg.C and 5-500kg/cm<2> pressure for 4-20hr to carry out hydroesterification and as necessary the reaction product is hydrolyzed to provide the aimed compound such as alpha-(p- isobutylphenyl)propionic acid useful as an intermediate, etc., for medicine having antiphlogistic and analgesic effect. |
