PURPOSE:To reduce the wasteful use of recording papers, by providing a discriminating means discriminating whether a position at which a printing head is at a stop can be determined as a printing start position on the basis of the output from a paper size detection means and an area detection means. CONSTITUTION:In a printer conducting printing on a recording paper by scanning and driving a printing head, the following means C1-C3 are provided: a paper size detection means C1 detecting a recording paper width A in the scanning direction of the printing head; and area detection means C2 detecting a maximum width B in the scanning direction of the printing head in a printing area defined by the layout of characters and symbols to be printed; and a discriminating means C3 discriminating whether a position at which a printing head is at a halt can be determined as a printing start position on the basis of the output from the paper size detection means and the area detection means.
