It is provided to carry out air filter monitoring using the dimming principle. In this case, a light source and a photoelement are arranged on opposite sides of the filter mat. The light intensity received by the photoelement is used in this case by an evaluation unit as a measure of the pollution (fouling) of the filter mat.
