PURPOSE:To simplify the construction of a tapping machine and make easy the handling thereof by screwing and feeding the main spindle of the tapping machine in agreement with a tap lead and adjusting the feed amount of the main spindle via the change of engagement between a pinion and a stepped gear. CONSTITUTION:An external thread part 14a formed on the external surface of a main spindle guide member 14 is screwed into an internal thread part 7a formed on the internal surface of a guide member 7. A main spindle 15 supported with the main spindle guide member 14 is rotated on the operation of a motor 23 via the first transmission mechanism 27, and the main spindle guide member 14 is also rotated on the operation of the motor 23 via the second transmission mechanism 42. When the main spindle guide member 14 is rotated, the main spindle 15 is precisely fed in an axial direction by the lead of the external thread part 14a and the internal thread part 7a. Also, when the feed amount of the main spindle 15 is changed, a tap 17 is changed and a selector arm 33 is turned, thereby disengaging a selector gear 35 from a gear part 21f. Thereafter, the selector arm 33 is shifted along a cylinder 18 in an axial direction and, for example, the selector gear 35 is engaged with the gear part 21a, thereby carrying out a threading process.
