A process is described for the production of a multicolour image in which a photosensitive material consisting of a temporary coating substrate and a photosensitive coating containing a dye or a pigment of a particular primary colour is laminated onto a temporary image receiving material using heat and pressure. The photosensitive coating is exposed beneath the appropriate colour separation image before or after lamination, the temporary coating substrate is peeled off before or after exposure and the coating is developed to produce a first separated colour image by washing out the nonimage areas. Then at least one other separated colour image in another primary colour is produced in register with the first separated colour image in the same way by transfer, exposure and development on the separated colour image. A protective foil which contains a base foil, a second adhesive coating and, optionally, an antiblocking coating between the base foil and the second adhesive coating is laminated onto the multicolour image obtained. The image receiving material is peeled off and the multicolour image is laminated onto a permanent image substrate corresponding in structure and appearance to the printing carrier on which the corresponding multicolour printed image is to be printed. The process yields a colour proof image whose substrate corresponds to the subsequent printing carrier and whose appearance is consequently better matched to the subsequent printed image. |
