PURPOSE:To provide a polymeric liquid crystal compound composed mainly of recurring unit comprising a group having aromatic ring and asymmetric carbon atom on side chain, exhibiting ferroelectricity even at normal temperature, having quick response to electric field to enable display of moving picture and suitable for display element having large display size or curves surface. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymeric liquid crystal compound has a number- average molecular weight of 4,000-400,000 and containing the recurring unit of formula I {R<1> is lower alkyl; k is 3-30; R<2> is group of formula II [R<3> is COOR<4> (R<4> is group of formula III; R<5> is CH3, Cl, Br or CN; C* is asymmetric carbon), OR<4>, etc.], etc.; m is 0-5; when m is 0, R<5> is not Cl or Br; n is 0-5; when n is 0, R<5> is not CH3}, formula IV (x is 0.6-1; y is 0-0.4; x+y=1), formula V or formula VI as a main component. |
