To reduce the amount of gritting salt on the roads and hence to preserve the environment, the salt is moistened with calcium chloride brine and then applied in an up to 30% reduced amount. This "double gritting plate" is easy to fit to existing gritting machines at any time. The separate application of salt and brine, the mixing of which does not occur until in flight after leaving the "double gritting plate", prevents clumping and guarantees a uniform, firmly adhering grit.
