A method for the adhesive binding of book blocks or the like, held in a conveying device between pairs of pincers, the spine surface of the book blocks being routed by means of a routing device, and a coating of glue being applied to the book blocks by means of a gluing roller, the height of the routed spine surface of the book block or the like being scanned immediately before reaching the gluing roller and the height of the gluing roller being adjusted in accordance with the height, determined by scanning, of the spine surface to be provided with a coating of glue, and apparatus for carrying out this method.
