The invention concerns a method of providing different departments of a supermarket and the like, which is provided with trolleys, with department-specific information. Each item of information is, for example, digitally prepared and stored in a central device, and then transmitted by lines to the intended departments, in a specified cycle and compressed in time. The compressed information is then transmitted by wireless means, in serial form, into the area of the particular department, received by receiving devices in the trolleys which are present at the time, temporarily stored, expanded to the original duration of the information, and made completely audible once in analogue form, i.e. from the beginning, irrespective of the position of the trolley in the particular department. Approximately simultaneously with, or immediately after, each acoustic playback of such department-specific information, a signal, which indicates that the information has been output, and is preferably coded, is transmitted by wireless means to a receiving device in the department and recorded, or passed on to a central storage and/or processing device with a department-specific code. This means that, for every sound-frequency playback of an item of information, a confirmation or a kind of acknowledgment, which can be processed appropriately, is given.
