PURPOSE:To use one printer as an ordinary printer and simultaneously as a symbol converting device to convert a bar code into an ordinary character or the like as well by arranging an image sensor in the neiborhood of a printing head in the printer with a paper feeding mechanism to print the character or a numeral, etc., by using the printing head. CONSTITUTION:The bar code is copied on a sheet of a form and this form is set in the paper feeding mechanism of the printer. Then, the bar code is successively read out by the image sensor 3. The image of the read bar code is sent to a CPU 22, and compared with a character.numeral data, registered previously in a CG-ROM 24, and a character data or the like corresponding to the respective bar code is selected and stored temporarily in a RAM 23. Next, the form on which the bar code is copied is taken out from the paper feeding mechanism of the printer, and the outputting form, specially prepared, is set in the paper feeding mechanism. Then, by performing a proper operation, the character or the like, corresponding to the bar code, stored in the RAM 23, is printed out.
