The invention concerns a protective batten which is used in buildings and which can provide a seal between a surface and a protruding structural part. For the protective batten to function effectively, be easy to fit and need only minimal skill and work, the batten 10 consists of an elongate protective strip 20 which has been made of elastic material and at whose one side 22 one or more reinforcements have been attached which run in its longitudinal direction. Each reinforcement 21 consists of a metal strip in which gaps or recesses 23, 24 have been formed which extend from the opposite edges of the metal strip 21 transverse to the longitudinal direction, so that the metal strip or strips can be stretched non-elastically in the longitudinal direction and, thus stretched, hold the side edges made of elastic material correspondingly stretched. <IMAGE>
