PURPOSE:To read a picture while correcting the effect of a shadow by using a correction coefficient in response to a local peak pattern discriminated based on plural positions of local peak levels so as to correct the read picture. CONSTITUTION:A read picture data is inputted to a peak hold circuit 1 and a level closest to the white level in a picture data is stored as a peak value in each local peak area at decentralized plural positions. Then the data comprising peak levels of the local peak areas is stored in a local peak storage circuit 2. Then a local peak pattern discrimination/correction coefficient output circuit 6 discriminates the local peak pattern from the distribution of the peak level and a data correction coefficient alpha of the opposite polarity with the discriminated pattern is outputted. Then a multiplier 7 multiplies the read picture data with the data correction coefficient alpha.
