For examining and observing the eye (19) by means of an illuminated optical system, a movable diaphragm (8) is arranged in the illuminating beam (5) and a synchronously movable mask (7) which covers reflected images is arranged in the observing beam (6), the arrangement in each case being made in an intermediate image (focal) plane. The moving diaphragm (8) preferably generates an opening sequence frequency which corresponds at least to the fusion frequency of the observing optical system (10). <IMAGE>
