If a piston of the said type comprises a head part (1) with formed on boss (2) and skirt (3) separate therefrom, which is connected to the head part (1) solely by way of the piston pin (10), and if the space radially inside the piston ring groove section of the head part (1) is furthermore an annular space (6) open to the skirt (3), it is difficult to cover the said annular space (6) by adjacent parts of the skirt (3) so as to produce as enclosed a cooling oil space as possible. Such an enclosed cooling oil annular space is obtained by dividing the skirt (3) in a longitudinal direction, preferably through the piston pin axis. As a result, the skirt (3) can be provided on its end adjacent to the piston head (1) with shielding parts, which extend radially further inwards than the radially outermost parts of the bosses (2) of the piston head (1), over which an undivided skirt (3) could not be displaced. <IMAGE>
