The method for assisting terrestrial navigation is based on the principle of a universal grid 2, termed a matrix, in which each intersection represents a crossroads numbered according to a universal distribution and represented on the ground by a short-range multifrequency transmitting beacon 1 whose bit pattern uniquely identifies, through a number specific to each crossroads, the transmission which is picked up by mobile equipment fitted with a computer with a PERT data processor, itself fitted with a short-range multifrequency receiver 11 and a keyboard 12 for entering the numbers of the crossroads at the ends of the section of the destination road. As an extension, the method is completed by a central transmitter 17 intended to supply the computers 10 with variables connecting the road names with the corresponding crossroad numbers, together with various indices specific to the structure of the town. <IMAGE>
