The invention relates to a digital device for automatic length measurement, which is portable, has a memory, preselection, restitution, and works in direct and absolute mode. It is composed of a casing 1 including a flexible roll-up tape 2 driven by a micromotor, on which is engraved a reflected binary code 3 corresponding to the dimensional measurement to be determined. The code is read by a head equipped with two separate units composed of optical readers. A keyboard equipped with suitable electronics makes it possible to store, preselect, restore or process the dimensional data. The dimensional parameters are displayed on a digital display 10 or output in audible form by a speech synthesizer 11. The device according to the invention is in particular intended advantageously to replace the conventional tape measure. <IMAGE>
