The invention describes a system for tensioning the transmission train of an internal combustion engine. The system includes a first and second tensioning devices 1, 2 each one provided with a tensioning roller 3, 4 corresponding respectively to a first and to a second belt- or chain-transmission train. The first tensioning device 1 is provided with a spring automatically moving the tensioning roller 3 and is connected to the second tensioning device 2 so that the reaction forces generated, when the engine operates under high load, in the first transmission train 4 may be recovered in order to move the tensioning roller 16.
