PURPOSE:To improve chemical stability by mixing metal alkoxides of cations constituting bismuth-substd. gadolinium iron garnet and coating the mixture on a substrate, then subjecting the coating to a heat treatment, thereby forming a recording layer. CONSTITUTION:Prescribed ratios of the alkoxides of Gd, Fe, Bi, and Ga which are the metal alkoxides of the cations constituting the bismuth-substd. gadolinium iron garnet expressed by the general formula BixGd3-xFe5-yMyO12 (M is an element which can be substd. with Fe, 0<x<3, 0<=y<5) are mixed and are diluted with a solvent, then the soln. is coated on the substrate. The coating is then subjected to heating, decomposition and crystallization to form the perpendicularly magnetized film consisting of the bismuth-substd. gadolinium iron garnet. Compsn. control is facilitated, the good surface smoothness and uniform film thickness are obtd. and the chemical stability is improved according to this method.
