A method of controlling an internal combustion engine of a vehicle having an exhaust turbocharger is proposed, in which the energy content of the exhaust gases is increased during acceleration of the vehicle to reduce the run-up time of the exhaust turbocharger. As a result of this measure, the optimum supercharging pressure is attained at an earlier stage, and a better and more uniform acceleration, also from low speeds, is achieved. <IMAGE>
