PURPOSE:To improve the operability of facsimile equipment, by causing the facsimile equipment to discriminate whether the facsimile equipment of an opposite station belongs to the company or is mini-fax(MF) equipment and to communicate with the opposite facsimile equipment in a relevant mode. CONSTITUTION:Facsimile equipment transmits calling signals CNG at the time of transmission and, when the facsimile equipment of an opposite station belongs to the company, the equipment has a means which detects the calling signals CNG and sends answer signals ANS. When the opposite station uses MF equipment, the equipment sends no answer signals ANS to the circuit because it does not have the above-mentioned means. Therefore, when presence/absence of the answer signals ANS is detected, whether the facsimile equipment of the opposite station belongs to the company or is MF equipment can be discriminated automatically. A communication button is depressed at the time of transmission, bit, since the reception is from the MF equipment when the calling signals CNG are not detected, phase signals PHS are detected, an MF mode receiving state can be set up immediately and it is not necessary to depress the communication button specially.
