A filter press contains two heads 1, 2 and a plurality of filter plates 5, which are connected to one another by means of loose connecting devices. The two heads 1, 2 are moveable in the filter press, so that the filter plates 5 can be moved in sequence and simultaneously from both ends and towards the centre in order to close the gap between the filter plates, or away from the centre in order to produce a gap between the filter plates. The time that is needed in order to bring together or to separate the filter plates can thereby be reduced considerably. When the filter plates have been brought together and one of the heads is being pressed whilst the other head is subject to the action of the stop devices, the filter plates are clamped powerfully together by a cylinder that has a shorter stroke length than in known presses. <IMAGE>
