CONSTITUTION:When document data is inputted from an input part 11, an input sentence is converted to image data and is binarized and is stored in a RAM 14 and is segmented into characters and is subjected to the smoothing processing. Black picture element data forming a character of segmented character data is counted. The total sum calculated in this manner is compared with a prescribed value n1. A dictionary 15a or 15b corresponding to the density is accessed based on the comparison result to execute the discrimination processing, and the result is outputted to an output part 16. Thus, the quantity of dictionary data to be accessed is reduced, and feature extraction is changed in accordance with character data, and the recognition rate is improved and the recognition speed is increased.
