PURPOSE:To decrease the data quantity for reduction of capacity of a memory and to realize the simplification of a program by coding information on an uneven surface when this information is picked up by a TV camera. CONSTITUTION:When a cylindrical lens CL1 close to a hologram 12 is set on an optical axis LC, a virtual image 5b is formed on an image pickup element 3 through the lens CL1. The vertical stripes are taken in by a memory via the element 3 as the uneven surface information Dh since the image 5b receives no vertical influence of the lens CL1. When a cylindrical lens CL2 set apart from the hologram 12 is set on the axis LC instead of the lens CL1, a virtual image 5a is formed on the element 3 by the lens CL2. The image 5a receives no horizontal influence of the lens CL2 and the horizontal stripes are stored as the uneven surface information Dv by the element 3. Then both information Dh and Dv are collated with each other and the features are extracted at the intersecting point between both information Dh and Dv and an encoding process is carried out.
