NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R<1> is 5-12C alkyl; R<2> is CH3, Cl or CN, provide that when m is 0, R<2> is not CH3; k and m are integers of 0-5; C* is asymmetric carbon). EXAMPLE:4-(4'-Nonyloxybenzoyloxy)phenyl-2-methylbutylate. USE:A chemically stable liquid crystal material exhibiting SmC* phase (chiral smectic C phase) in relatively wide temperature range near room temperature and capable of responding at high speed. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II is reacted with a compound expressed by formula III in the presence of a base such as triethylamine as a deacid agent in a solvent such as THF in order to carry out esterification to provide the aimed compound expressed by formula I. The compound expressed by formula II can be produced from a compound expressed by formula IV through a compound expressed by formula V and the compound expressed by formula III can be produced from a compound expressed by formula VI.
