摘要 <p>In a process for improving the efficiency of biological purification of waste water and/or sludge treatment, the bacteria involved in the biological process are irradiated with linearly polarized light and thereby supplied with a quantity of energy in excess of a given threshold value equal to 15 J/cm2 of irradiated surface. The irradiation can be conveniently carried out with linearly polarized light containing infrared spectral components. The liquid to be treated is circulated in a separate liquid branch the depth of which corresponds to the depth of penetration of the light, and this branch is irradiated over a distance appropriate to the flow rate, the intensity of the irradiation, and the said energy threshold value. It is advantageous if the free surface of any desired reactor, for example the anaerobic reactor (1), the anoxic reactor (2) or the aerobic reactor (3), or of a sedimentation tank, for example the post-sedimentation tank (4), of the waste water purification plant is irradiated and the liquid in the reactor or sedimentation tank is kept in motion during irradiation. The treatment facilitates the adaptation of the system to new types of pollution, reduces the load on the plant, and/or decreases the phosphate content of the waste water.</p>
