PURPOSE:To easily reduce the hydrogen content in an Al compact prepared according to powder metallurgy and to obtain a material having superior mechanical properties, by precompacting an Al powder at low temp. until the prescribed density is reached and then by heat-treating the resulting green compact under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:An Al powder is precompacted at low temp. by using pressing equipment until density reaches 50-90% of true density. Subsequently, the resulting green compact is heated and held in the air at 150-250 deg.C for 1-30hr. By this method, hydrogen content in the compact to be finally obtained is reduced to <=about 5ppm, and the material having superior mechanical properties can be obtained.
