PURPOSE:To make it possible to provide the titled novel compound corresponding to n=1/7 in the chemical formula (YbFeO3)nFeO, by replacing Fe<2+> with Zn<2+>. CONSTITUTION:Metallic Yb, ytterbium oxide or a compound (A) decomposable into the ytterbium oxide by heating, metallic iron, iron oxide or a compound (B) decomposable into the iron oxide by heating and metallic zinc, zinc oxide or a compound (C) decomposable into the zinc oxide by heating are prepared. The substances (A), (B) and (C) are mixed at 1:1:7 atomic ratio of Yb:Fe:Zn. The resultant mixture is then heated at >=650 deg.C in the air, an oxidizing atmosphere or a reducing atmosphere in which the Yb and Fe are not respectively reduced from the trivalent ion state and the Zn is not reduced from the bivalent ion state. Thereby the aimed novel brown powdery compound useful as magnetic, semiconductor materials and catalysts is obtained.
