PURPOSE:To bring an aiming subject into focus preventing the background from in focus by obtaining an information signal regarding focus adjustment from an image signal extracted by a temperature range setting circuit. CONSTITUTION:When the one-line infrared-ray video signal from an infrared image pickup device 1 is supplied to a differentiating circuit 8 through the temperature range setting circuit 2, a dynamic range of, for example, 0-10V corresponds to a temperature measurement range of 0-100 deg.C which can be measured by a device. The circuit 2 specifies a temperature range wherein a subject is present within a temperature measurement range of 0-1,000 deg.C by center temperature CT and temperature width TW. For example, center temperature of 100 deg.C and temperature width of 20 deg.C are specified, the part between lower-limit temperature of 90 deg.C and upper-limit temperature of 110 deg.C is extracted from the one-line infrared-ray video signal in a figure (a) and amplified into a specific dynamic range and outputted from the circuit 2. Then the signal is sent to the differentiating circuit 9 to obtain information on a focus, which is adjusted to make the aiming subject at original in focus.
