The invention relates to a process and an apparatus for converting highly viscous liquids into a concentrate, using heat exchangers through which flow the liquids to be converted and a heat transport medium, the process according to the invention being characterised in that a mixture of vapours and gases, released on heating the liquids, is collected and compressed, in that the compressed mixture is passed as a heat transport medium through a first heat exchanger through which the liquid flows and in that the condensate, arising in the first heat exchanger, of the heat transport medium is passed through a second heat exchanger connected upstream of the entry of the liquid into the first heat exchanger.
