The invention relates to a locking device consisting of a key and lock cylinder, the key shank of the key possessing locking notches on the narrow side facing away from the key spine and/or locking depressions and longitudinal profilings on at least one wide side of the shank. It proposes, particularly for a simple location of the insertion point, that there be formed between the shank spine (12) and the narrow side a column-shaped shank region (13') which extends in the longitudinal direction of the key and cooperates with a correspondingly designed keyway region (9') of the lock cylinder (4) and which projects beyond the wide sides of the key and has on its end face a cone (19) forming the key tip. <IMAGE>
