NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I {R<1> is 1-30C alkyl, 6-12C aryl or aralkyl; at least one of R<2> and R<3> is 1-10C alkyl, 6-12C aryl or aralkyl; group of formula II is adamantyl; R<4> is H, R<2>, R<3> or halogen; R<5> is R<1>, acyl or H; R<6> is R<4>, alkoxy, cyano or nitro; X is O or N-R<7> [R<7> is R<1> or 3-30C (meth)acrylalkyl]; n is 0-6}. EXAMPLE:(E)-alpha-(1,2-dimethyl-3-indolyl)ethylidene(isopropylidene)su ccinic anhydri de. USE:The compound has photochromic property, exhibits broad and large absorp tion band at long wavelength side in colored state, has high chemical stability such as oxidation resistance and excellent durability and is useful as a recording material, optical element material, etc. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced in high yield by Stobbe condensation of an acetylindole derivative of formula III with a succinic acid ester of formula IV (R<8> is alkyl).
