PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a raw material of germicide, nonionic surfactant or antioxidant in high purity, by stripping p-cumylphenol containing alpha-methylstyrene or phenol as an impurity under specific conditions. CONSTITUTION:p-Cumylphenol containing alpha-methylstyrene or phenol as impurity is subjected to stripping using an inert gas such as nitrogen and carbon dioxide and/or steam at 70-180 deg.C to provide p-cumylphenol. The stripping is carried out by batch type, continuous type, continuous countercurrent contact method, etc., introducing an inert gas or steam into a stirring vessel. A amount of the alpha-methylstyrene or phenol included in the p-cumylphenol is preferably <=10%, especially <=1%. Thus the aimed product having high purity is extremely effectively obtained in reduced decomposition of p-cumylphenol.
