PURPOSE:To obtain cresol from phenol and methanol, by using a catalyst of long life consisting of a crystalline silicate compound containing an element selected from respective group IIB, VA, VIB, VIIB and VIII elements and boron. CONSTITUTION:Phenol is reacted with methanol in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst to afford cresol. In the process, a crystalline silicate compound containing one or two or more elements selected from group IIB, VA, VIB, VIIB and VIII elements (e.g. zinc, cadmium, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, rhenium, nickel, palladium and platinum) and boron is used as the catalyst. That is the above-mentioned crystalline silicate contains the afore-mentioned elements other than aluminum. The cresol is obtained in high yield by this method. |
