An apparatus for controlling the sequence of movements in an exercise apparatus or the like, with variable loading, has a member for performing movement. The movement is transmitted via a device which is connected to a unit generating the variable load. The member which can be actuated to perform the movement is linked to an element which is mounted to be capable of rotation and is connected via a free-wheel to the unit generating the variable load. This unit generating the variable load contains a braking device with an adjustment device for changing the braking force.
