PURPOSE:To improve recording density and sensitivity and to permit high-speed recording by using a thin film consisting of an amorphous alloy of a specific compsn. having an axis of easy magnetization in the direction perpendicular to the film plane as a recording medium. CONSTITUTION:This recording film is the thin film consisting of the amorphous alloy having the axis of easy magnetization in the direction perpendicular to the film plane (LRzR1-z)x(Fe1-yCoy)1-x (LR is at least >=1 kinds of elements among light rare earth elements such as La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, and Eu; R is at least one kind of Tb, Gd or Dy) in which the atomic ratios are 0.15<=xz0.35, 0<y<0.5, 0.00<z<1.00. The amorphous alloy has preferably the compsn. (SmzTb1-z)x(Fe1-yCoy)1-y. The thin magnetic film of such amorphous alloy is formed by, for example, a sputtering method, etc., don a base supported at about a room temp. and since the film has large coercive force at a room temp., a low Curie temp. and large Kerr rotating angle, the film has excellent recording and reproducing characteristics. The magneto-optical recording medium having the high density, high sensitivity and large SN is thereby obtd.
