PURPOSE:To achieve a higher durability of a quartz window, by building a new shield layer in an nuclear reactor to prevent corrosion of the quartz window by acid. CONSTITUTION:A pair of electrodes 5 are imbedded at both ends of a carbon furnace 2, in which 2 a carbon tube 1 is placed. Holders 14 having quartz windows 3a and 3b respectively are provided on the inlet and outlet sides of absorbed light passing through the carbon tube 1. An inert gas introduction port 6 and a discharge port 8 are provided via a piping 7 near the respective quartz windows 3a and 3b. The shape, position and the like of the introduction port 6 and the discharge port 8 are so selected that inert gas flowing in at the introduction port 6 forms a laminar 9 flow along the vicinity of the inner surfaces of the quartz windows 3a and 3b, gathered to the discharge port 8 and flows outside the reactor. Thus, as a shield layer 9 blocks the passage of a carrier gas containing an acid vapor, the acid vapor is kept from touching the quartz windows to prevent corrosion of the quartz windows.
