PURPOSE:To disperse wear of a roll in the axial direction and to improve the quality of a rolled stock by concurrently shifting work rolls and intermediate rolls in the axial direction before and during rolling or in either time of before rolling or during rolling. CONSTITUTION:For rolling of a strip 3, actuation and rotation of intermediate rolls 4 and a lower work roll 20 cause following rotation of an upper work roll 1, an upper segmented reinforcing rolls 10a, 10b, and a lower reinforcing roll 26. Roll shifting mechanisms 40, 42 alternately, reciprocately shift outer chocks 103a, 103b and lower work roll chocks 104a, 104b in the roll axial direction by a prescribed amplitude. Hence, the strip 3 is passed and rolled with the upper work roll 1 and the intermediate roll 4 as well as the lower work roll 20 are reciprocatively shifted to each other and symmetrically in upper and lower positions.
