PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound from an inexpensive raw material on an industrial scale at a low cost, by reacting myrcene with hydrogen chloride in the presence of a copper catalyst, reacting the product with a phenylsulfinic acid salt in the presence of a halogenated tetraalkylammonium and cyclizing the product under acidic condition. CONSTITUTION:Myrcene is made to react with hydrogen chloride in the presence of a copper catalyst such as cuprous chloride to obtain a mixture of linalyl chloride, neryl chloride and geranyl chloride. The objective cyclogeranylphenyl sulfone of formula I (R is H or alkyl) can be produced in high yield by reacting the above mixture with a phenylsulfinic acid salt in the presence of a halogenated tetraalkylammonium and cyclizing the reaction product under acidic condition (e.g. using a mixture of sulfuric acid and formic acid, acetic acid, etc.). The raw material of the process are easily available at low cost. The product is useful as a synthetic intermediate for vitamin A acetate. |
