PURPOSE:To obtain an antibacterial agent showing extremely excellent effects on various bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, having high safety, comprising clay minerals containing a metallic ion or metallic compound except Na, K, Li and Ca between layers. CONSTITUTION:An antibacterial agent comprising clay minerals containing an ion of metal (e.g. Ag, Zn, Co, Cd or Cu) except Na, K, Li and Ca or a compound thereof (e.g. hydroxide or oxide) between layers. As production of the antibacterial agent, water-swelling clay minerals are dispersed into a solution prepared by dissolving a water-soluble salt of Ag, Zn or Cu in water or an organic solvent (e.g. methanol or acetone) to give precipitate, separating washing and drying the precipitate to give the aimed substance containing the metallic ion or dripping an alkali solution to the dispersion to give precipitate and collecting the aimed substance containing a metallic hydroxide from the precipitate. The agent form is slurry, powder, dispersion or blend with nylon and fine powder of the agent can be supported on a sheet and used.
