NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula (R1 is H or CH3). USE:Useful as a diluent for coating agent, paint, printing ink, adhesive, etc. It has high rate of curing and excellent hydrolysis resistance and colorability and is suitable for fields in which long-term reliability is especially required. PREPARATION:The objective compound of formula can be produced by reacting 3-methyl-1,5-pentanediol with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor (e.g. hydroquinone) in a solvent such as cyclohexane at 50-130 deg.C. If necessary, the reaction is carried out in the presence of an esterification catalyst such as p-toluenesulfonic acid. The amount of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid is 1-5mol. per 0.5mol. of 3-methyl-1,5-pentanediol and that of the polymerization inhibitor is 0.01-5wt.% of the mixture.
