Cellulose triacetate fibers having at least 42.5 wt.% acetyl gps. are produced by extruding cellulose triacetate soln in a solvent mixt. comprising an organic acid with pka of no more than 3.5 pref. trifluoroacetic acid and another solvent with mol. wt. of less than 160 pref. selected from water, methylene chloride and formic acid through an inlet non-coagulating fluid layer into a coagulating bath. The cellulose triacetate fibers have an inherent viscosity of at least 5, a tenacity of at least 8 dn/tex. and an orietation angle of 35 degrees.
