PURPOSE:To enable noncontact detection by providing an infrared-ray transmission member between an infrared detector and a wheel and further providing a driving mechanism which brings its end surface into contact with a vehicle. CONSTITUTION:When a brake shoe is run by being pressed against the wheel 1 at the time of snowfall, the wheel 1 rises up to temperature corresponding to the pressing pressure of the brake shoe 2 and corresponding infrared rays are emitted. The infrared rays are incident on the infrared detector 4 through the infrared-ray transmission member 5 and the wheel temperature is detected. Then an output proportional to the wheel temperature is obtained from the detector 4. Further, the end surface of the member 5 faces the wheel 1 and is driven by the driving mechanism 6 so that it is pressed against the wheel 1. Here, dirt on the end surface of the member 5 is removed by the friction between the member 5 and wheel 1 when the body are pressed against each other. The detector 4, therefore, detects the temperature of the wheel 1 without contacting in spite of unfavorable conditions such as the dirt of the wheel 1, rainfall, snowfall, and the sunshine.
