NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (R is H or methyl; n is 5-20). EXAMPLE:10-Mercaptodecyl methacrylate. USE:An undercoating agent for bonding metallic materials, having excellent adhesive force with improved water resistance to constituent component noble metals of a polymerization curing type adhesive and especially suitable for dental uses. PREPARATION:An omega-hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate is reacted with an aromatic or aliphatic sulfonyl chloride, preferably p-toluenesulfonyl chloride, etc., to provide a sulfonate expressed by formula II (R1 is H or methyl; R2 is hydrocarbon), which is then reacted with thiourea to afford a compound expressed by formula III (Y<1> is sulfonium or halogen ion). If metallic ions are present in the reaction system, mercaptide ions are generated to instantly link to the metallic ions to precipitate the compound expressed by formula III as a salt. An acid is then added to the salt to provide the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
